What Is an AI Visibility Audit? What It Checks and When You Need One

SEO audits grade your Google ranking. This grades a newer question: when a customer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, does it say your name?

A growing share of your customers never see a list of links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI a question, and the assistant answers with two or three business names. If yours is one of them, you get calls you never advertised for. If it is not, you lose customers to a shortlist you cannot see. An AI visibility audit exists to answer one question about that: are you in the answer, and if not, what exactly is keeping you out?

The short version. An AI visibility audit checks whether AI assistants can find, read, and confidently describe your business, then tests what they actually say when a customer asks. The output is a ranked list of specific barriers, each with a fix. It is sometimes called a GEO audit, an AEO audit, or an AI SEO audit; under any name, this is what a real one does.

The two halves of the audit

The first half is technical. Can AI crawlers and browsing tools reach your site at all? Does your page arrive as readable text, or as an empty shell that only fills in after a browser runs JavaScript? Are your name, services, hours, and location stated as structured data a machine can lift directly, and do those facts match what Google and the directories say about you? Every one of these can quietly fail while your site looks perfect to a person.

The second half is observational, and it is the part you cannot do by looking at your own website: someone puts real customer questions to the assistants, records the answers word for word, and reports who gets named, how you are described, and which competitors keep taking the spot you expected. The technical half explains the results; the observational half is the ground truth.

How it differs from an SEO audit

The two overlap, because assistants lean on the same web Google reads, but they grade different things. An SEO audit asks whether a page can rank: keywords, links, indexing, speed. An AI visibility audit asks whether a business can be described: assistants answer in sentences, so what matters is whether a machine can state, with confidence, what you do, where you are, and why you are worth naming.

That difference is why a business can sit on page one of Google and still never appear in an AI answer, and why a modest site with clean, consistent facts sometimes beats a bigger competitor to the mention. Ranking rewards a page. A mention rewards a business that is easy to describe and backed by more than one source.

What a thorough audit covers

  1. Access. Whether AI crawlers can get in at all. A firewall rule, a bot blocker, or a robots.txt line copied years ago can shut them out without anyone noticing.
  2. Readability. Whether your pages reach a machine as text or as a blank shell. Our guide on how AI actually reads your website shows how common this failure is and how to spot it.
  3. The facts in your code. Structured data, and whether it agrees with your Google Business Profile and the directories. When sources disagree, assistants hedge, and a hedging assistant names someone else.
  4. Live answer testing. Real customer questions put to ChatGPT and other assistants, quoted word for word, so you know exactly where you stand today.
  5. The competitor gap. For every question where a rival is named and you are not: what they have that you lack, and which of those gaps is cheapest to close.

What no audit can promise

Nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend you, and anyone who promises a specific AI mention is selling something the assistants do not offer. Answers change between runs, models, and months. What an honest audit does is find the barriers that make a mention unlikely, show you today's answers word for word, and rank the fixes. With the barriers gone, you compete on the same footing as the businesses currently being named.

Do you need one?

Start with the free test you can run yourself: our guide on checking whether ChatGPT recommends your business takes about twenty minutes and needs no tools. If competitors keep coming up in your place, an audit tells you why. And if you run one of the trades we cover, your industry page shows a real ChatGPT answer for your line of work, so you can see the problem before you measure it. The fastest first step either way is the free check, which reads your homepage the way a machine does and flags the access and readability barriers in minutes.
